Explosions - Three Days Grace

After an exciting British grand prix from MotoGP that saw impressive drives from Maverick Vinales and Jack Miller, ending up p.2 and p.3 respectfully. As well as an incredible winning drive from Francesco Bagnaia, putting him right back in the title fight, and what a drive from Aleix Espargaro ending p.9 after that massive highside in FP4 the previous day. An album that holds the same amount of energy and excitement is the 7th studio album from Three Days Grace, Explosions. Explosions was released on May 6th 2022 and is the bands first studio album since 2018.

Heres a track-by-track breakdown of the album, with each song being ranked from p.1 to p.12. *TRACKS ARE LISTED IN ALBUM ORDER*

So Called Life - p.10

So Called Life is the first track of the album and it has that classic unique Three Days Grace (TDG) sound, where just as soon as you hear it you know its a TDG song. While its great that this song fits the bands sound and is easily identifiable as their song, it does sound like a mesh of various older TDG songs and it is very easy to tune it out as background music after a few listens. While it is an enjoyable song and has a great sound the repetitiveness does bring it down a bit to not be as great as some of the other tracks on this album.

I Am The Weapon - p.11

I Am The Weapon carries on with that classic TDG sound and was very close to being one of my favourite songs on the album ... until about halfway into the chorus the flow of the song is completely interrupted. The flow changes to having every line punched out almost and very broken off and disconnected, which follows into the post chorus before returning to the original flow. While this style of punched out, aggressive, make a point lyrics is quite fitting for songs of this genre I felt it didn't fit this particular song.

Neurotic (feat. Lukas Rossi) - p.6

Neurotic is the first song of the album to have a featuring artist and I felt that Lukas Rossi fit into the song very nicely and suited the bands overall sound. This song is one of the songs on this album I keep coming back to, it's a nice easy listen and has a great build up in it where you can really feel the energy and connect to the track.

Lifetime - p.4

Lifetime is the fourth song of the album and coincidentally also got ranked p.4, it is one of the best songs on the album both lyrically and musically. It is one of the more toned down songs on the album but that does not stop its ability to form a connection with the listener. It reels you in for this great build up that leaves you feeling ready, to go and do whatever it may be that you need to do.

A Scar Is Born - p.8

A Scar Is Born is where we see a resurgence of that classic TDG sound that really ties into their older work, however this track is able to capture that unique sound without taking away from its own image. It sounds like it could easily fit in with albums like Human or One-X without sounding like just a mesh of the songs from them. The end product of this mix of classic and new sounds and styles makes for a great song that's easy to listen to time and time again.

Souvenirs - p.7

Souvenirs is another song that is able to mix those newer sounds with the classic TDG feel. I believe souvenirs is just slightly better than A Scar Is Born as it fits more into the overall sound of the album, but they both go very hand-in-hand with that blend of styles. Post chorus there is a slight break in the song where it gets stripped back before building back up to send it home with the final chorus, which results in a nice smooth ending to the track and allows for it to be a great stand-alone song to listen to.

No Tomorrow - p.9

No Tomorrow has a great sound and nice flow, however it is another song that is very easy to tune out of and exist in the background. Lyrically it's a great song, despite the repetitiveness, and musically it does build up from start to finish although there wasn't enough to bring the listeners attention back in to focus on the song.

Redemption - p.1

Redemption I felt was the best song of the album, it is so captivating and it takes you on this journey with it as it builds to show an incredible range of emotion and musicality. As soon as it begins it starts straight off with vocals and just hooks you in for the ride as it works through this overwhelming need to make things right.

Champion - p.12

Champion is another song where the flow gets interrupted by disconnected lyrics, where post chorus the lyrics felt very alienated and broken up which i felt didn't fit the feel and flow of the song. Other than that it's ok, the sound isn't the best i've heard from TDG but it doesn't sound bad. The song is quite easy to tune out of and isn't very memorable.

Chain of Abuse - p.5

Chain of Abuse is an absolutely fantastic song that engages listeners and takes you on an experience. I ranked it slightly lower because it does have a small introduction in the beginning of the song which I personally am not a huge fan of, but it does fit into the song nicely and adds an extra element to it.

Someone To Talk To (feat. Apocalyptica) - p.3

Someone To Talk To is the penultimate track of the album and is another one of those more toned down, stripped back songs. This song is able to captivate and engage the listener as it starts very simple and stripped down and then it gradually builds up into this fantastic ending that leaves you wanting more.

Explosions - p.2

Explosions is the title track of the album and is one of the best songs on this album, I was incredibly torn between this and Redemption to be the top song of the album but I just found redemption to be slightly better. That being said this is an incredible song with the amount of energy it is able to build up within it and convey to a listener, it is truely captivating. This song is easily one of the best Three Days Grace songs i've ever listened to.
